We utilise a structured literacy approach to Reading, Writing and Spelling schoolwide from Year 1 to Year 8 at Whitikahu. We use the iDeaL approach to structured literacy. IDeaL provides a wonderful learning platform, it is New Zealand’s only online Structured Literacy platform, and can be accessed anywhere online using the iDeaL online platform. This approach aligns consistent practice in a whole-school approach. IDeaL creates an evidence based, consistent educational pathway for our ākonga.

We, also, have Guided, Shared and Independent Reading programmes within each of our classes. We have Writing workshops, skills and genre focuses each term within each of our classes. A variety of digital tools and Apps are used to enhance our English learning programmes.
